TRAINING At Battle Ridge Kennels & K9 Services, LLC all of the dogs we train follow national standards and guidelines whether it's for narcotic detection, explosive detection, accelerant detection, patrol/utility or dual purpose. Also, all of our trainers are current K9 handlers so the experience they have is passed on to the students. Here are the general guidelines that we follow. NARCOTICS DETECTION The basic odors that we imprint include marijuana, cocaine, heroin and meth. Other odors may be added if requested by the client. All K9s will be trained to give a passive indication unless otherwise specified. The search patterns will include interior/exterior vehicles, buildings, luggage and/or parcels. The K9s will be trained to search both on/off lead. EXPLOSIVE DETECTION K9s will be imprinted with the basic odors to include RDX, PETN, TNT, CHLORATES, NITRATES and different brands of smokeless as well as black powder. The search patterns will include exterior vehicles, buildings, luggage and/or parcels. ACCELERANT DETECTION We imprint a minimum of (9) nine odors choosing (3) three from each division or category of hydrocarbons. HEAVY hydrocarbons include fuel oil, diesel fuel, turpentine, lamp oil and transmission fluid. MEDIUM hydrocarbons include paint remover, lacquer thinner, kerosene, gasoline and gasohol. LIGHT hydrocarbons include charcoal lighter fluid, paint thinner and dry gas. The areas the K9 will be trained to search include structures, open areas, paint can line ups, clothing line ups and vehicle interiors. PATROL/UTILITY WORK In patrol work or what is sometimes referred to as utility work, all the dogs start with obedience and control. The dogs will be proficient in on/off lead obedience to include hand signals as well as voice commands. The control aspect of training comes into play during the guard or "pat down" and cover to cover exercises. This aspect is the foundation to all other training. Once the dog is reliable on the hand and voice commands as well as in it's control, then we will move into the scenario based phase of training. In patrol work all the dogs will be trained in felony building searches, open area searches, criminal apprehension and officer protection. TRACKING/TRAILING All of our patrol and dual purpose dogs are usually trained in tracking unless otherwise specified. When tracking we use multiple surfaces, ages and lengths in training. The K9s will be proficient in tracking an individual anywhere from city streets to wooded areas. If you have additional questions use the Online Inquiry to contact us.
